Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Women & Pregnant Inmates In Texas County Jails
The 241 Texas county jails hold approximately 450 pregnant inmates on any given day. That's an overall of roughly 5,000 pregnant inmates annually. This initiative works to ensure that they are not shackled during childbirth, and monitors conditions, including their medical and dietary needs, in accordance with HB 3653 and 3654. We speak to lawmakers about the need for more data and for implementation; HB 1140 was passed and signed into law, requiring a detailed survey of each jail's policies and practices regarding pregnant women.
Community Safety Agenda
Community Safety Agenda (CSA) is a life-affirming vision for how Harris County can build safe and healthy communities while reducing the size and scope of policing. The CSA collaborative is developing a series of budget recommendations that advance community safety principles & prevent wasteful increases to law enforcement. CSA brings together advocates from varied spaces such as public health, housing, economic justice, labor, education, and climate justice to develop a shared platform that spans each issue area. The intersectional CSA coalition is reshaping the narrative regarding what really keeps communities safe while building new bridges to advance shared policy goals.
Community Bail Fund
Strengthen rural county footprint and mobilize communities in red counties across the state that support individuals held in pre-trial detention.
Advocacy
Fostering micro-communities of family advocates and continuing to engage and learn about the collective struggle of disabled, mental illness, and marginalized community members in jails.
Our objective is to grow the number of systems impacted and community advocates who seek to replace systems of punishment with communities of care.
Mutual Aid
TJP provides essential advocacy services and holistic support for incarcerated individuals and their families. TJP also provides mutual aid for commissary, collect calls, transportation, housing, food, utilities and pretrial diversion.
Operation Lone Star
Operation Lone Star (OLS) was launched in March 2021 by Texas Governor Greg Abbot to ramp up security along the Texas-Mexico border. TJP works in a statewide coalition “Operation Constellation” comprising Grassroots Leadership, Texas Civil Rights Project, ACLU TX, Texas Fair Defense Project, Rio Grande Legal Aid, Neighborhood Public Defender Service, Lubbock Public Defender's Office and immigrant rights organizations to counter OLS by documenting pretrial conditions and treatment.

Jail Project of Texas
Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Executive Director
Krish Gundu
Texas Jail Project (TJP) is a team of women of color who have been directly impacted by police violence and incarceration.
TJP partners with community members to amplify their voices by strategically bringing first hand account testimonies to real time legislative and policy making meetings, hearings, and spaces at the legislature. TJP provides essential services and holistic resources that support the material conditions and immediate harm experienced by community members most impacted by police violence. TJP's work involves meeting community members where they are and providing them with direct aid to meet their most urgent needs. TJP connects families to build solidarity and community networks while fostering micro-communities of family advocates and continuing to engage and learn about the collective struggle of disabled, mental illness, and marginalized community members.
